In West Africa and throughout the region mobile devices have become the main tool for activism organizing community leadership and journalism But this connectivity also brings new digital risks including surveillance targeted hacking malware social engineering and the threat of device loss or seizure This course empowers civil society activists journalists human rights defenders and community leaders with practical knowledge and hands on skills to keep their mobile communications and sensitive data secure no matter the level of technical experience
Participants will explore the real threats they might face in their daily work from the interception of calls and messages to targeted malware attacks lost or confiscated devices social media account takeovers and exposure through leaked conversations The course draws on recent local case studies showing the consequences of inadequate mobile security and the value of smart proactive habits
Learners will discover how to confidently select set up and use secure messaging apps that offer end to end encryption for both private chats and groups They will learn the differences among tools like Signal WhatsApp and Telegram including their strengths limitations and how to avoid leaks through group membership changes or device sharing Simple explanations and live demos show how encryption protects messages files and calls from being accessed by anyone but intended recipients—blocking even app companies or malicious actors
